transformation

high-rise bunker

Germany, Essen, 2014

concept

By sensitively extending the high-rise bunker vertically this monolithic reminder of the past is revitalized with a new utilisation.
The donned building is a prefabricated penthouse designed as a timber-framed construction. To accentuate the difference between old and new the junction is executed as a shadow gap that also functions as the installation level.
Like a ''course of history'' the inhabitants and guests can experience the way to the penthouse per the existing staircase of the bunker.
